College Profile

Hofstra University is a dynamic, private university where students succeed and study in about 140 undergraduate, 150 graduate programs of study, and a number of dual-degree programs. The various divisions of the University provide students with a broad array of academic offerings: Hofstra College of Liberal Arts and Sciences; Hofstra University Honors College; Frank G. Zarb School of Business; School of Communication; School of Education; School of Health Sciences and Human Services; Maurice A. Deane School of Law at Hofstra University; Hofstra North Shore-LIJ School of Medicine at Hofstra University; and the newly created School of Engineering and Applied Science.

A student-faculty ratio of 14-to-1 and an average undergraduate class size of 21 allow professors to teach small classes that emphasize interaction, critical thinking, and analysis.

Students are motivated and success-oriented, and Hofstra provides the resources they need to reach their goals: an outstanding faculty, extensive academic resources and state-of-the-art facilities. In addition to the many opportunities available on Hofstra’s lively campus, students have easy access to, and benefit from, the academic, cultural, media and career opportunities of nearby New York City. These opportunities are designed to develop individual students’ interests and abilities.

Hofstra’s faculty is one of its greatest resources. Ninety-two percent of full-time faculty hold the highest degree attainable in their fields. Faculty are dedicated to excellence in teaching, scholarship and research, and many have been recognized with the nation’s higher academic honors, including membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences, Fulbright and Guggenheim Fellowships, National Science Foundation and National Endowment for the Humanities awards, and Emmy Awards.

Hofstra’s distinctive, 97-hectare campus, a recognized arboretum, is located 40 kilometers from New York City. The campus features state-of-the-art teaching facilities, including a converged newsroom and multimedia classroom, one of the most advanced academic trading rooms in the nation, six theaters, an accredited museum and a rooftop observatory. The Hofstra libraries provide 24/7 electronic access to more than 95,000 journals and electronic books and contain 1.2 million print volumes. Additionally, there are 37 residence halls, 20 eateries, an Olympic-sized swimming pool, and extensive athletic and new fitness facilities.
