College Profile

Manhattan College is an independent Catholic institution of higher learning that embraces qualified men and women of all faiths, cultures, and traditions. The mission of Manhattan College is to provide a contemporary, person-centered educational experience that prepares graduates for lives of personal development, professional success, civic engagement, and service to their fellow human beings. The College pursues this mission through programs that integrate a broad liberal education with concentration in specific disciplines in the arts and sciences or with professional preparation in business, education and engineering.

Established in 1853 by the Institute of the Brothers of the Christian Schools, the College continues to draw its inspiration from the heritage of John Baptist de La Salle, the innovator of modern pedagogy and patron saint of teachers. Among the hallmarks of this Lasallian heritage are excellence in teaching, respect for human dignity, reflection on faith and its relation to reason, an emphasis on ethical conduct, and commitment to social justice.

Nestled in the historic neighborhood of Riverdale, our lovely campus in the Bronx is close to dozens of restaurants and shops, as well as Van Cortlandt Park, one of New York’s largest parks. Best of all, we’re only 35 minutes from midtown Manhattan. Our unbeatable location offers a unique and safe way to take advantage of all New York City has to offer. You’ll get a true college campus experience while also having easy access to the jobs and internships found in New York City, plus all of the amazing cultural experiences found in this city.

Many colleges and universities in this region boast about their proximity to New York City, but at Manhattan College we offer a truly unique location. We are within the boundaries of New York City and our campus is next door to a subway stop. But unlike many other New York City schools, we have a true college campus — 23 acres centered around a quad where our students play Frisbee, study under the sun and hang out with friends.

Manhattan was once referred to as “The Best Kept Secret in New York City.” Today, the secret’s out — Manhattan College is nationally recognized as a top school in preparing its graduates for successful careers at international companies like IBM, Google, JP Morgan and Wells Fargo. In fact, less than a year after graduating, on average 90% of alumni report that they are employed or in graduate school. On top of that, Manhattan College is exceeding expected results in areas like starting salaries and mid-career earnings, warranting a “value-added” label from institutions like Forbes, Brookings and Payscale.

English as a Second Language Program and Services

Does your institution have an Intensive English Program?
Yes

Manhattan College’s Intensive English Language Program (IELP) helps international students learn the English language in a small classroom setting on a traditional college campus in New York City. The program offers six levels of English beginner, intermediate and advanced levels of academic English where students benefit from individualized attention and support from professors and peers. Qualified students who successfully complete the IELP will be granted admission into undergraduate programs and will have satisfied the English language proficiency requirement for graduate programs.

Manhattan College can issue an I-20 Certificate of Eligibility for F-1 Student Status to a student who has been admitted only to the Intensive English Program.

Manhattan College provides courses of English as a Second Language to admitted students.

International Student Housing Options

Living on campus in one of our five residence halls is an important part of the full college experience. Your floormates will become your second family — a network of friends who you’ll bond with over shared meals, late night study sessions and Netflix binges.

Each of our residence halls has a resident director, a staff member who coordinates residence life programming and oversees the resident assistants, better known as RAs. RAs are students, typically upperclassmen, who live on each floor of the hall and serve as a liaison and resource for the residents. RAs plan regular activities, like game night and trips to popular New York City destinations, to create a bonded community on their floor.
