At Stony Brook you will be learning from those who are making the discoveries and generating the knowledge that is changing the world. Stony Brook is one of only 94 institutions in the country to be designated a “Very High Research University” by the Carnegie Foundation. Our faculty have been responsible for more than 1,500 inventions and 450 patents. With 70 academic departments, Stony Brook is among the top 40 institutions funded by the National Science Foundation.
Stony Brook is home to an exceptionally diverse student body hailing from all over the U.S and more than 100 foreign countries. We offer more than 200 undergraduate majors, minors, and combined degree programs, 102 Master’s, 40 Doctoral programs, as well as Intensive English (IEC). Our most popular undergraduate programs are Biology, Psychology, Business Management, Health Science, Economics, Sociology, History, Political Science, English, and Biochemistry. Ninty-four percent of recent graduates are currently employed or enrolled in graduate or professional school.
Stony Brook’s Undergraduate Colleges for freshmen provide a close-knit residential-based community, featuring small first-year seminars and close connections to faculty. The student retention rate is 91.6 percent. Our undergraduates are encouraged to explore — in the laboratory through our Undergraduate Research and Creative Activities (URECA) program, and around the world through our unique study abroad programs.
Located 60 miles east of New York City. Stony Brook’s reach extends from its 1,000-acre campus on Long Island’s North Shore, encompassing the main academic areas, an 8,300-seat stadium and sports complex, a performing arts center, Stony Brook University Medical Center, the Health Sciences Center, and the Veterans Home, to a Research and Development Park, three business incubators, locations in Manhattan and Southampton, and unique study abroad programs in countries around the globe.
Stony Brook co-manages nearby Brookhaven National Laboratory, joining such prestigious schools as Cornell, Princeton, and the University of California-Berkeley on the list of major institutions that run federal research laboratories, and providing extraordinary research opportunities for Stony Brook’s undergraduate and graduate students.
And Stony Brook is still growing. To the students, the scholars, the health professionals, the entrepreneurs, and all the valued members who make up the vibrant Stony Brook community, this is a not only a great local and national university, but one that is making an impact on a global scale.
