College Profile

In 1932, Charles S. “Casey” Jones, a pioneer aviator and aviation company executive, foresaw the need for highly trained technicians to design, build and service aircraft and engines. George A. Vaughn Jr., a World War I flying ace, and Lee D. Warrender, an engineer, joined with Jones in establishing the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics, the predecessor of the Academy of Aeronautics, and in September 1986, the College of Aeronautics.

From 1932 through 1947, the school offered design and maintenance programs, graduating well trained technicians, many of whom went on to secure leadership positions in the aviation and aerospace industries.

From 1941 to 1945, the Casey Jones School of Aeronautics devoted its resources to the nation’s war effort. During World War II, more than 20,000 technicians were trained for the armed forces.

In fall 1964, the Academy of Aeronautics conferred Associate in Applied Science degrees for the first time, and, in 1969, the Academy was accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools.

In 1996, the College completely revised its curricula, resulting in nine new academic programs, including for the first time the Bachelor of Science and an associate degree in Flight.

On May 5, 1998, a state-of-the-art, 35,000- square-foot-addition to the building complex was completed. It includes a 65-foot observation tower, providing a spectacular view of the runways at LaGuardia Airport.

In fall 2001, the College created the Aviation Training Institute, from which the Aviation Maintenance certificate program is offered. It enables students to earn their airframe and powerplant (A&P) certificate in as few as 16 months. Details about the program, along with its major benefits, appear in our Catalog

Effective September 1, 2004, the Board of Regents of the state of New York approved the institution changing its name from the College of Aeronautics to Vaughn College of Aeronautics and Technology. Vaughn is a four-year, private institution with bachelor’s and associate degrees in engineering and technology, aviation and management.

In fall 2007, Vaughn opened its first residence hall with 200 beds. New improvement plans include a new cafeteria, additional degree programs and certificates, and other improvements and additions to the main campus and ATI building. This vision calls for us to provide students with an enriching experience both inside and outside the classroom.

In spring 2008, Vaughn offered its first Master of Science in Airport Management—another step forward in implementing Vaughn’s strategic agenda.

What separates Vaughn College from other institutions is our uniquely committed faculty who come to the classroom with extensive experience in such fields as engineering, manufacturing, aviation, management and communications. Working closely with the industries we serve, Vaughn has developed rigorous curricula that incorporate the latest technology as well as the knowledge you need to succeed in your chosen profession.

We provide traditional degrees as well as professional, technical and certification programs that prepare our graduates for successful careers. Most importantly, a degree from Vaughn College provides the critical, analytical and communication skills that form the foundation for a lifetime of success. Our graduates have gone on to become leaders in many major industries. More than 88 percent of our graduates are employed or continue their education, 75 percent in their field of study, within one year of graduation.

International Student Housing Options

As you’re making your college decisions, you’re also probably deciding where you’re going to live. Choosing to live in a residence hall can help ease the transition to life on your own and help you make new connections to your peers. You can also take advantage of all that New York City has to offer.

Consider becoming part of the Vaughn College residential community. Unlike off-campus living, the residence hall provides you with a unique living environment where all of your neighbors are students just like you. It’s a place to form bonds with people with whom you will be sharing memorable experiences. More importantly, it is a place to foster relationships with the people you’ll consider your best friends for the rest of your life.

Vaughn students who live in the residence all enjoy (almost) all the comforts of home―and more. To keep our residence hall comfortable for all, students who live here must follow our policies and procedures.

Does the prospect of living on campus appeal to you? Living in the residence hall gives you a full college experience. And what better way to experience college than in one of the greatest cities in the world―just minutes away from some of the world’s most well-known airports and airlines?

Features of the Vaughn College Residence Hall

We developed our residence hall to meet the needs of all students, which include a space to cook and eat, places to study or relax with friends, and conveniently located rooms to do laundry. Our facility includes:

A fully-equipped kitchen you can use virtually any time

A dining hall that’s open on weekdays and weekends. A variety of meal plan options are available.

Two laundry rooms, which makes washing and drying your own clothes another opportunity to hang out with friends.

Three student lounges―one on each floor.

Students living in the residence hall also have full access to a number of amenities to stay fit, study in a comfortable environment and mingle with other classmates.

All Vaughn students also have access to our:

West Wing Cafeteria. Open Monday through Friday from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.; Saturday from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Closed on Sundays.

Collaborative Programs

We have a collaborative arrangement with a university in China, with nearly 200 students participating. These students complete a block of instruction at their home institution and transfer to Vaughn after their third year. After attending Vaughn for 16 months, they can sit for examinations and certifying them as Federal Aviation Administration airframe and powerplant aircraft maintenance technicians. They also graduate with a BS in Aviation Maintenance Management. Graduates from this program have gone on and been offered key positions in China at airlines and aircraft manufacturing facilities.

First Year, Transfer, and Graduate Students

In general, bachelor of science (BS) degree applicants should have an SAT of 1050 (combined critical reading and math) or higher and GPA of 80 or higher. Our associate in applied sciences programs have an open admissions policy. The student must have high school diploma or equivalent.

Official results of the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) must be submitted by all applicants from countries where English is not the official language of instruction. A minimum score of 550 on the paper exam is required for admission consideration; 213 on the computer-based format; or 80 on the Internet-based format. Students who fall below this range will be required to complete an intensive English-language program.

Although there are admissions requirements, the college evaluates each applicant on an individual basis.
