College Profile

St. John’s University

A leading Catholic university in exciting New York City, St. John’s prepares students from around the world for success as ethical leaders in today’s global society, and we get results. According to The Wall Street Journal, St. John’s is among the top 100 colleges that are “most likely to help students land a job in key careers and professions— areas that are growing, pay well, and offer high levels of satisfaction.” St. John’s is also featured in The Princeton Review’s 2013 guide to The Best 377 Colleges. We are also #15 in the Forbes list of “Colleges That Will Make You Rich.”

Representing many nationalities, cultures, and faith traditions, St. John’s students are united in their desire to have a positive impact on the world. Courses, programs, and activities reflect the University’s focus on fighting poverty and injustice, a pillar of our Vincentian mission.

A great place to learn

St. John’s draws international students from 116 countries. They pursue more than 100 acclaimed academic programs in the arts and sciences, business, computer-related fields, education, pharmacy, and the allied health professions.

At St. John’s, you’ll learn from professors with international reputations for excellence. More than 92% of our professors hold doctoral or equivalent degrees in their fields. Our 18:1 student-faculty ratio offers students personal attention in the classroom and research opportunities with top faculty.

New York City is a vital part of our students’ education. With innovative courses like Discover New York, a wide range of service activities, and fantastic internships through our award-winning Career Center, students use metropolitan New York—America’s most dynamic “college town”—as an extended classroom.

Technology is part of the St. John’s experience. Students have access to St. John’s sophisticated academic software, including Tell Me More language-learning software. In addition, St. John’s has invested more than $20 million to upgrade its research labs, computer labs, and other science facilities.

A great place to live

You will enjoy life at either of St. John’s two residential New York

City locations: the 96.5-acre Queens campus or the 16.5-acre Staten Island campus, as well as our non-residential campus in Manhattan. We also have international campuses in Rome, Italy; Paris, France; and a location in Seville, Spain.

Campus life features 180 student clubs, fraternities, sororities, and an active campus ministry. We also offer the excitement of our Division I BIG EAST men’s and women’s athletic teams.

On our Queens campus, ultramodern residence halls form a Residence Village with some suite-style accommodations, 24-hour security, ample lounges, and a separate dining hall. Juniors and seniors also have the option of townhouse-style residence halls adjacent to the Residence Village. All are a short walk to classroom buildings, athletic facilities, cafeterias, and the University Library.

The Staten Island campus offers modern, apartment-style student residences adjacent to the campus. Featuring kitchens and common lounges, the residences are grouped around a grassy courtyard where students gather to chat, toss Frisbees, or just take in the sun.

Serving our international students

All international students enjoy personal support through our Office of International Student and Scholar Services. Our professional staff helps students adjust to academic life, obtain a driver’s license, secure immigration assistance, and get to know New York City.
