Mohawk Valley Community College (MVCC) is a unit of the State University of New York (SUNY) and offers the first two years of a university education as well as vocational programs. Students begin at MVCC at half the cost of a major university and then MVCC assists them in transferring to another university to complete their B.A.The TOEFL is not required; instead, MVCC gives all entering students a placement test and helps them choose courses in which they will succeed. Some students begin in one of the four levels of academic English as a Second Language and then proceed to their majors after earning the ESL certificate, and others, depending on their ability in English, go directly into their chosen major. Classes are small, and MVCC’s emphasis is on excellent teaching—and student learning—rather than on research. All students are required to complete a Diversity/Global View requirement for graduation, including classes, online tutorials, and attendance at cultural events.
Residence halls are available for 500 students, as are a wide variety of athletic activities and student clubs and organizations. A diverse and popular cultural series offers 50 events on campus a semester, and clubs regularly organize visits to locations such as Boston and New York.
MVCC is in a safe, representative medium-sized American city of 60,000 people four hours by car from New York City. The area is very historic and offers many opportunities for its size: it hosts Broadway shows, concerts, and world-class museum exhibits. A casino resort is nearby.
MVCC is fully accredited
